Changing Seasons Winter -- Terry Redlin

Winter

Winter is the coldest season of the year. The Northern Hemisphere, the northern half of the earth, has winter weather during December, January, February, and early March. In the SouthelTI Hemisphere, winter weather begins in late June and lasts until early September. For dates of the first day of winter and information about the position of the earth and sun during winter.

During winter, the polar region is especially cold because the sun does not rise there for weeks or months at a time. Cold, dry air moves south from this region, blinging cold weather. Storms move from west to east along the southern edge of the cold air. In the United States, winter storms produce large snowfalls in some areas. The most snow falls in the western mountains and in much of the northern region east of the Rocky Mountains. Many winter storms bring rain to warmer southern areas. The lowest winter temperatures usually occur in the middle of all continents.

WINTER

I am Winter full of woe,
I am the season that is oh-so-slow!
White! White everywhere!
The only type of weather I have is fair
Snow on top of mountains,
Frozen water in the fountains.
Snow and Ice help me on my quest,
To try and make me the very best.
Spring and Summer are my worst foes,
I hate them so bad I melt my own snow!
Autumn is okay, He is my best friend,
Our friendship won't ever have an end.
Frost is the twin brother of Ice,
He has a temper as hot as spice!
Well, I am sorry I have to go,
The sun is starting to melt my snow!

A Winter Gift

Deep within the winter gray
There flashed a bit of red;
And where there once was gloominess,
A cardinal stood instead.

He perched upon the feeders edge,
Standing straight and stout;
A brisk wind stirred his feather up
And snowflakes swirled about

His gentle chirping made a song
That, soothed the air until
He settled to eat some seeds,
Content despite the chill.

This tiny, crimson focal point
Recast the snowy scene,
Transforming winter's barren view
From dismal to serene.

He seemed to share a secret
By his calm within the squall;
If he could brave this season's chill,
Then so could one and all.

He stayed his time, then flew away.
And as he left I knew. . .
God sent this cardinal gift today
For me, and now for you.

Days When the Snow Packed Right

When winter's winds blew bitter cold,
I used to stay within the fold
And wait for days with warming sun
To venture out and join the fun
The days when the snow packed right.
'Cause zero days were good for naught;
I could .not count the colds I caught.
How useless was the sugar snow,
And so I wished, at ten below,
For days when the snow packed right.
But when it rose to right at freezing,
Then the snow was ripe for squeezing,
And when you shaped it there it stayed!
I still can hear the scrunch it made
On days when the snow packed right.
When snowballs flew and filled the skies,
And all around the forts would rise,
The yells and challenges went forth
The happy sounds of life up north
And days when the snow packed right
 The giggling silence for a while
As whispering warriors made a pile
Of snowballs for a sneak attack
To take the enemy aback
On days when the snow packed right.
And when you had about a hundred,
You would find your judgment blundered
'Cause all the while you made your store,
The other fort made even more,
Those days when the snow packed right.
Then shouts of "Charge!" and shots of snow
Fast went flying to and fro,
And he who stood and turned his back
Received a cold, wet squishy smack
On days when the snow packed right.
Quite suddenly the laughter dies;
I'm older now and realize
On snowy days and frigid nights
How happy were the snowball fights
And days when the snow packed right.

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that
within me there lay an invincible summer.
