Purpleunicorn's Palace - Happy Friendship Day!

History

A friend, while defined as simply as someone to whom you are connected through esteem or affection, is a person of great importance. Friends form your support network for rough times, expose you to new people, situations, options, and points of view, not to mention provide the social, intellectual, creative, and other kinds of essential stimulation. The depth of a friendship will vary depending on the pairing of people, the circumstances in which they meet, each of their needs and interests, and the other’s ability to fulfill and understand them, but the ultimate necessity of forming the relationship at all, whether it turns out for the best or worst, is made apparent by the constant quest of human beings for closer and more satisfying friendships. The first Sunday in August was proclaimed National Friendship Day by the United States Congress in 1935, and has been commemorated as such annually.

Tradition

Humans are intricately social creatures, therefore individuals outside of one’s family structure, known as chums, pals, buddies, acquaintances, mates, just to name a few, are an irreplaceable part of the socialization process. Use National Friendship Day to reach out to yours, whether you do so by setting up a face-to-face meeting, calling, writing, sending cards, flowers, or gifts. There is an endless variety of ways to let your friends know just how much they are appreciated, the most important of which is to be a good friend all year round. That may mean putting up with idiosyncratic behavior, attitudes contrary to your own, and generally exhibiting a lot of patience and encouragement for that person’s individuality. But to take full pleasure in and take advantage of all those aspects is to know the genuine meaning of friendship. After all, it is the differences between people that make them interesting to one another and give them something to learn from. Remember the wise words of C. C. Colton, "True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost."

"It takes a long time to grow an old friend."
~John Leonard~

Fact

In 1997, Winnie the Pooh was named the world's
Ambassador of Friendship by the United States.

"Friends are like smakerals of fun.
You can never have too many."

~Pooh~

Dear Friend

Because you are my friend, I see
Life in a different way,
And joy I had not hoped to know,
Adds sparkle to each day.
A long forgotten memory
Arises from the past,
Of all we are allowed to keep
And things that never last.

But seasons come and seasons go,
And we remain a part
Of all the true nobility
We carry in our heart.
A friend to understand and care,
That's how it ought to be
And so I pray the road you walk
...Is wide enough for me.

Friendship Day is August 1st!

Congress sanctioned National Friendship Day in 1935
as a special day to honor and celebrate friendships.

Friends are a very precious gift. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their heart to us. Show your friends how much you care by sending them a card or letter.

August 1st is International Friendship Day -
and that means its time to recognise your friends and the great contribution they make to your life.

Friends come in many shapes, sizes and guises... same-age friends, school friends, older friends, siblings, work colleagues, partners, parents, pets or neighbours. They can be near or far away; we can talk to them daily or only occasionally; some friends we only get to know in cyber-space....

Celebrate Friendship!

Friendship

Cultivate a friendship,
As you do a garden bed;
Nourish, feed and watch it grow,
With help and nice things said.

Smile, it's like the sunshine
Needed for the flowers,
Loving hands to tend and care,
Soft rains and sun-filled hours.

Little hurts are like the weeds,
That come between the rows;
Pull and cast them out before
The beautiful friendship goes.

Be proud of your well-tended garden,
And proud of a good friend too,
All the work you put into them
Will come straight back to you.

Don't neglect your garden,
Or the good friends that you know,
Don't let a single day go by,
Keep trying, both will grow.

Things to do with your Friends

Send a nice card or letter to your friend telling
them how much you appreciate their friendship.

Buy or make them a small present -
flowers, chocolates, a cake, cookies or
anything that catches your imagination!

Call an old friend you haven't spoken to in ages.

Plan a special day with your best friend or friendship group.

Hug them!

Make a point to call every one of your friends
on Friendship Day to let them know you care!

"I can trust my friends.
These people force me to
examine, encourage me to grow."

~Cher~

A Letter

A letter is the warmest way
to bid a friend the time of day,
A keep-in-touch that brings the smiles,
Across the very longest miles.
And what a wealth of strength and hope,
Is tucked inside an envelope,
Reminding loved ones that you are,
At least in heart, not very far.
In no country, state or camp,
The wealth beneath a postage stamp,
For memories that never age,
Are written down upon each page.
And though it's nice to telephone,
One of the sweetest pleasures known,
Are moments shared in thoughts we send,
...That can be read, and read again.
